Three-time winner of Kenya’s coveted ‘Best Tented Camp’ award, this magnificent place in the heart of Kenya’s largest national park has defined the entire art of luxury camping. The camp nestles at the foot of the Chyulu Hills of Tsavo West and its best features are the series of spring-fed pools in which hippos wallow and bathe at any time of the day.
Best known for Robert Redford’s romantic portrayal of the character, this extraordinary tented camp is named after Denys Finch Hatton - a great white hunter of colonial Kenya who introduced Royalty to the bush.
The lodge reflects Finch Hatton's thriving legacy, who wouldn’t do without some safari ‘indispensables’ like 10-foot-high tents and damask tablecloths, through its impeccable style with crystal glasses, fine wines and silver service dinners.
Each traditional safari tent is a striking picture of sophistication, equipped with deluxe beds, antique writing desks and all of the amenities of 5-star accommodation- electricity, fully stocked mini-bar, en-suite toilet, washbasin and a generous slate shower room with solar-heated running water.
Finch Hatton’s main building comprises an elegant dining hall, lounge, bar and mezzanine library, where post-dinner drinks and coffees can be enjoyed to the sound of classical music. The breakfast terrace overlooks the main hippo pool with views of Mt. Kilimanjaro completing the scene. There is also a beautiful large swimming pool.

Timeless colonial style also means that guests change out of their safari shorts and into something more appropriate in the evening as dinner is taken very seriously here. Served by waiters wearing the traditional snowy-white tunic of the colonial period, the five courses are served skillfully and thoughtfully. The cooking is accomplished and indulgent and the continental deserts made by the Finch Hatton’s patisserie are superb. A well-stocked cellar offers an excellent range of international wines.
As Finch Hatton’s lodge is unfenced and animals can come and go as they please, you have a guard to accompany you to your safari tent. At night resident hippos graze on grass right next to your tent and Elephants may wander by- and you can watch what’s happening in the neighbourhood from the safety of your veranda while having a nightcap! It really doesn’t get much better than this.
