Governors' Camp

The setting of Governors’ Camp is magical - so much so that almost a century ago it was reserved, exclusively, for Kenya’s colonial Governors and their royal visitors.

Governors from birdseye viewHalf of the 36 spacious tents look out over the rolling golden grassland of Kenya’s Great Plains, with views of herds of elephant, zebra and gazelle, the rest line the banks of the Mara River. The decked bar is right on the water’s edge, the perfect spot to watch the wallowing hippos.

Here’s how Travel and Leisure Magazine described the camp when its readers voted the Camp fourth in ‘The Top 10 Hotels in the World’ in ’98:

Governors’ Camp is a site popular with both animals, which come to the river to drink, and people. As in the past the hotel emphasizes enjoying the wild splendours of Africa in the highest possible style. Guests stay in well-appointed canvas tents, each with its own bathroom. Evenings are devoted to cocktails around a bonfire and dinner by candlelight.

Hardly surprising that Governors’ Camp was the setting for the filming of 'Out of Africa', and that much of the BBC's Big Cat Diary was filmed close to here.

Governors’ Camp is one of the few camps within the Mara that do three game drives every day. During migration time you can observe all the action at the Mara River. Not only are grazing animals particularly common in this area but big cat sightings are also particularly prevalent, which made Governos' Camp the obvious choice for BBC’s 'Big Cat Diaries' team. The bushlands around Rhino Ridge are also good areas for spotting one of the Masai Mara’s 20 or so black rhinos.

But there are also alternative means of wildlife viewing - by foot outside the National Park or with complementary bird walk around the camp to admire the 82 species of bird. Sunrise balloon safaris offer a spectacular way of witnessing the diversity present within the Masai Mara.

It is possible to visit the nearby Mararianta School, which has been completely rebuilt and developed with funds generated by Governors’ Camp and the BBC. This establishment provides education for students who walk up to 10km through the bush each day.
