Kenya in brief

Situated on the east coast of Africa, right on the Equator, is the exciting and colourful
Republic of Kenya (scroll down for a map).

In a little more than 580,000 km2 (approximately 250,000sq miles) and from sea level to altitudes of 5,199 meters (17,058 feet) one can experience the scorching desert sun of Mandera, the famous snow of Mount Kenya, the sun-splashed white beaches of Mombasa or the misty, damp moorland climate of Limuru.

Equally fascinating is Kenya’s multi- racial population comprising of Africans (representing over 40 different tribes), Arabs, Europeans, Indians, Pakistanis and other Asian groups.

Over 50 different languages and dialects are spoken in Kenya, yet there is one language that unifies the nation and that is KISWAHILI. On the whole, however, one can make themselves understood by speaking English almost anywhere within the Republic. Even with all these different people and customs, Kenya is reputed to be one of the most economically and politically stable countries on the continent of Africa.

Formerly a British colony, Kenya gained her independence on December 12th, 1963 after eight years of fierce uprising led by the famous ‘Mau Mau’ freedom fighters. For 15 years Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the first President of Kenya, implemented the spirit of ‘Harambee’ (unite and pull together to build the nation) and created a solid foundation for this new Africa Republic.

His Excellency, President Daniel Arap Moi, succeeded Mzee Kenyatta in 1978 while current President Kibaki came to power in 2002 and was re-elected in December 2007.

Kenya is known for the abundance of wildlife but few realise that this same African country produces some of the world’s best coffee and tea, most of which is grown in the rich farmland areas of Kericho and Kiambu. Various Kenyan-grown fruits and vegetables, such as pineapples and french beans, are also exported to different corners of the world.

Kenya info - craftsmanApart from having ‘green fingers’, many Kenyans are skilled craftsmen, as can be seen from the beautiful handcraft items being sold both locally and abroad. Multi-coloured sisal baskets and ingeniously carved mahogany figures all bear the stamp “Made in Kenya’. The word ‘Magic’ has often been used to describe Kenya and capture its essence.

But no matter how enchanting the noun or how colourful the adjective…. Kenya cannot be described in brief. One has to experience Kenya to believe it. For a short excursion into Kenya’s geography, history, cultural heritage and present situation please read on:
