The centre of the park is dominated by Lake Nakuru, a shallow soda lake. The lake was designated Kenya’s first Ramsar site for conservation and sustainable use of wetlands in 1990, being of international importance for waterfowl like greater flamingo and giant white pelicans.

LANDSCAPE

The park spans an attractive range of terrains, offering a wide ecological diversity: from open savanna around the lake to mature woodland and a superb forest on the eastern side of the park.

GAME & BIRDS

This lake offers one of the world's most spectacular wildlife sights - that of brilliant pink flamingos as far as the eye can see. When conditions are right, between one and two million lesser flamingos feed on algae around the shores of the shallow soda lake, together with tens of thousands of other birds.

The best place to view the birds is from Baboon Cliff, where you can look out over the dazzling fringe of pink around the lake's shores. Here you will also see warthog, waterbuck and large numbers of impala.

Other slightly shyer residents include buffalo, Rothschild giraffe, eland, tree-climbing lion and leopard. There are no elephants but it goes without saying that this is a bird watchers paradise. Notable game within the lake includes hippos and clawless otters.

Rhino family at Lake NakuruThe woodlands and forest are now home to both black and white rhino. In 1987, only two black rhino remained following devastation by poachers. By creating a rhino sanctuary within the park and reintroducing a breeding herd, the Kenya Wildlife Service has now successfully re-established rhino in the park.

Lake Nakuru with its pink flying jewels is a beacon for leading ornithologists, scientists and wildlife filmmakers.
