"We had a couple of hours to spare on Sunday, so we popped into the park, and saw a rhino and a giraffe giving birth." This comment was made by a local resident about Nairobi National Park, a glorious stretch of savannah and Kenya's oldest animal sanctuary.

It is here that you can get unique photographs of lion, rhino, giraffes and wildebeest strolling against a backdrop of the glinting skyscrapers of Nairobi, the cosmopolitan capital city of Kenya.

LANDSCAPE

Nairobi is the only city in the world which neighbours a natural game protection area, harbouring over 100 species of mammals. The park borders the traditional South Kapiti Plains and Kitengela Migration Corridor and, fenced only on one side, attracts a range of exciting game.

Cheetah cubGAME & BIRDS

It is a great place to see Kenya's indigenous Black Rhino, as it is a little too close to the city for the comfort of poachers. Over past years (1977, 1992, 1994, 1995) a cheetah in the park managed to successfully raise 7(!) cubs per litter to the delight of local and international visitors. Although it is a seasonal park most of the game lives in the protection of the park year round.

In a dramatic display of Kenya's commitment to curbing the slaughter of elephants for their tusks Kenya's former President Daniel Arap Moi torched ivory worth millions in a great bonfire. The site is near the main gate of the park and bears a commemorative plaque with the striking words "Great objectives often require great sacrifices". Since then, the great bonfire has been lit twice to banish confiscated stocks of poached rhino horn and ivory.
