Samburu Lodge

Samburu Lodge grounds

The sun baked landscape is breathtaking with surrounding mountains shimmering on the horizon as temperatures rise. To the west, the sheer sided slopes of majestic Ol Olokwe Mountain form a perfect backdrop to any photograph. The Uaso Nyiro River (Brown river in the local language) winds through mature stands of Newtonia and Sycamore Fig trees, Acacia and Doum Palms. And it is here you will find Samburu Lodge - beautifully situated in 10 acres of pristine riverine forest on the western bank of the river.

Samburu Lodge accomodation
There is a wide choice of accommodation with a mixture of decor styles spread up and down the banks of the river in cottages, bandas and single or twin rooms. All 61 rooms have large beds with mosquito nets and en-suite bathrooms and verandas overlooking the river. There are also several family rooms and one room has been custom designed to accommodate the special needs of physically challenged persons.

Facing the river, the open sided dining room of the Lorokushu Restaurant, designed in distinct African style with high thatched roof, allows you to overlook the river as you enjoy mouth watering cuisine prepared by the team of chefs. As meals are served here a Samburu flute player entertains you with his distinctive tunes. samburu_lodge_dining

The famous Crocodile Bar is on the level of the river bank to allow you to look crocodiles in the eye as you sip your sundowners. Towards sunset each day, bait is put out to attract crocodiles to within feet of watchers, but in conditions of perfect safety. On a good night you might also see the secretive leopard silently arrive to the fresh meat put out on a tree across the river.

Alternatively, the Vulturine Bar draws on Samburu's abundant and unique bird life and is opened through out the day and evening, also overlooking the river.

Samburu dancers dressed in their traditional finery entertain with their dances in the lodge arena daily from 2.30 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. On evenings, alternating with the showing of a wildlife video, a troop of Masai Morans (warriors) entertain with a display of traditional dancing.

The enclosed area shaded by flowering shrubs around the pool also has sun beds and a pool side bar serving drinks and snacks. The swimming pool also features a Jacuzzi and a game viewing deck overlooking the park.

As expected of such a place there are also a gift shop, telephone/ fax and laundry/dry cleaning services available and bird walks are taken every day at 10.00pm with the resident naturalist.

Samburu Lodge will show you the dramatic wilderness from a world of fascinating perspectives: through early morning game drives, walking safaris with skilled Samburu guides, camel rides, and raft trips when the river is high. This is true wilderness, and home to varieties of animals and birds only seen in this part of the country- the Beisa oryx, gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe and blue-legged Somali ostrich.
