Located 2,195m high on the flanks of Kenya’s highest mountain and secreted deep within its largest forest reserve Serena Mountain Lodge offers crystal-clear mountain air, the tranquillity of the forest and a rich variety of wildlife.
The lodge has paneled walls and winding stairs leading to a selection of snugly comfortable, cabin-styled rooms. The 42 brightly renovated en-suite rooms feature thick-pile locally woven rugs and wall-hangings, whilst the décor has been designed to provide glowing warmth and fireside comfort against the evening chill of this unique tropical mountain environment.

The traditionally timbered dining room is surrounded by windows and has been built on stilts so as to seemingly float above the liana-strung forest whilst commanding enchanting views over this primeval environment. The menu has been planned to offer a blend of traditionally hearty Kenya safari favourites, spicy ethnic cuisine, crisp salads and internationally-themed dishes.
The cosily-welcoming bar centers on a glowing fire and has been tastefully decorated with traditional Kikuyu handicrafts and a series of sepia prints depicting the traditional Kikuyu way of life.
A timbered drawbridge leads from a winding path in the depths of the rainforest, over a moat of sun-dappled jungle and up on to the wooden ‘decks’ of the forest-green, timbered lodge. Cool, tranquil and hushed for optimum game-sightings, the open-air timbered game - viewing-deck looks down onto the endlessly shifting scenes of the wildlife theatre that troops and teems around the salt lick and waterhole below.
This is also where you can enjoy your sundowners, overlooking the water hole where cavalcades of buffalo, elephant and other wildlife come to drink.
Come evening, the softly glowing lamps and warmly upholstered arm-chairs allow for optimum night-viewing and a close up look at the forest coming to life at dusk.
But if you are in search of a really close wildlife encounter try the special ‘hide’ – it’s a specially constructed viewing bunker, connected to the lodge by a short tunnel, delivering the once-in-a-lifetime thrill of uttermost closeness to the animals coming to drink at the water hole.
Because of the dense forest bird watching is especially popular and the naturalist conducts daily bird walks through the forest nearby Post mountain-climbing herbal massages and other relaxing beauty treatments.
Other optional activities offered at the lodge include Safari tea in a forest glade whilst following the winding paths of the rainforest, a lamp-lit, Kenya safari-dinner, ‘under canvas’ and high on the roof of the lodge, 'Wildlife and Mountain Wilderness’ talks and slide-shows by the resident naturalist.
Facilities at the lodge include modern communication facilities, a nurse on call 24hrs, satellite TV, and gift shop. A wide range of board games plus a full library of books on Africa are also available for you to pass your evenings.
