Shimba Hills Lodge

shimba_hills_smallShimba Hills Tree Lodge rises up through the trees and creepers, with aerial plant life, birds, butterflies and humans all sharing the deep forest glade.

The 30 standard rooms over three stories come with balcony vantage points and from bars and observation platforms you have views across the small, dammed lake to thick forest - black and white Colobus monkeys and  elephants are often seen. For the very fortunate, the Leopard will make a rare appearance.

The best feature is the tree-level wooden walkway, which extends from one end of the lodge to a platform high above the ground near a small clearing that allows for the unobtrusive viewing of birds, butterflies, warthogs, forest antelope and monkeys galore.

Enjoy the achingly beautiful sunsets and sunrises at the lodge's sundowner site from where you can, on a clear day, even view the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. However, views are quite exceptional from Shimba Hills in any case - to the east of the escarpment you will see the turquoise of the Indian Ocean; to the west hazy vistas of the cast plains with Taita Hills ascending in the distance.

Other adventures include a visit to Sheldrick Falls , or an evening game drive followed by a walk through the forest that ends with drinks and snacks in a glade.

The lodge stays refreshingly cool in its forest setting despite being only 45 minutes drive from the hot, humid coastal city of Mombasa and 30 minutes from the South coast resort of Diani Beach. Its proximity to the coast make Shimba Hills National Reserve and the lodge a perfect outing for those who want to see game without having to travel to any of the other national parks further a field.

The reserve is also the last remaining habitat of the rare and impressive Sable Antelope in East Africa.
